The Rule of Three: A Simple Styling Strategy That Changes Everything
Have you ever bought something you loved in the store, only to find it hanging in your wardrobe weeks later, unworn, and awkwardly hard to match?
You’re not alone. One of the biggest style traps we fall into is buying beautiful, standalone pieces that don’t go with the rest of our wardrobe.
That’s where The Rule of Three comes in, and once you start using it, shopping (and styling) becomes so much easier.
What Is The Rule of Three?
It’s simple. Before buying anything new, ensure it goes with at least three items you already own.
That’s it.
Sounds easy, but it’s powerful. This one small habit can completely transform your wardrobe, helping you build a collection of pieces that work together, instead of competing for attention. In all three images below, I am wearing a recently-purchased Navy Cable Knit Jumper from Target. I have paired it with navy work trousers, pink linen trousers and jeans.

Why It Works
1. Instant Versatility
If a piece works with three existing items, you immediately have at least three new outfits. Add accessories or layering pieces, and that number could potentially skyrocket. You’re no longer buying “one-hit wonders.”
2. More Value from Every Purchase
Let’s be honest, clothes cost money, and we want them to earn their keep. The Rule of Three helps you make smarter investments by ensuring your new item is not only stylish but wearable, too.
3. Reduces Closet Clutter
No more “nothing to wear” moments in a wardrobe bursting at the seams. When everything works together, you get more outfits from fewer pieces. It’s quality over quantity. Less but better.
4. Builds a Cohesive Style
Investing in pieces that match your existing wardrobe naturally leads to a more consistent, authentic style; one that feels like you.
How to Use the Rule in Real Life
Perhaps you’re eyeing a gorgeous green silk blouse. Ask yourself:
- Can I wear it with my high-waisted jeans?
- Will it pair with my neutral pencil skirt I wear to work?
- Can I dress it down with my white linen shorts in summer?
If the answer is yes to all three, go for it!
However, if you’re struggling to think of even one outfit, it might be a sign that the piece doesn’t align with your current wardrobe, self-image, or lifestyle.
This Finby Metallic Cardigan by Elk is one of my favourite items, and is on high rotation.
Worn below with jeans, black cropped trousers and navy trousers, with different scarves.

A Quick Tip: Know Your Wardrobe
The Rule of Three only works if you know what’s in your wardrobe. That’s why regular wardrobe edits or a seasonal refresh are so helpful. If it’s been a while since you took stock, consider doing a wardrobe edit, and you might rediscover hidden gems or realise what you really need next.
The Rule of Three isn’t about restricting your style. It’s about making choices that support your style goals, budget, and lifestyle. Whether building a capsule wardrobe or just trying to shop more mindfully, this rule can be your secret weapon.
This simple rule helps you build a more cohesive wardrobe, avoid impulse purchases, and ensures every new addition works hard for you. A piece probably doesn’t belong in your closet if it doesn’t complement at least three existing pieces.
Next time a new purchase tempts you, stop and ask: “Can I wear this three ways, right now, with what I already own?”
If the answer is yes, you’re not just buying a new piece, you’re investing in your style.
